Mission Beach

Mission Beach

Mission Beach is a popular spot along the East Coast of Australia, well known for it’s skydiving. Fresh off the boat from Townsville, we drove the short journey north to stay for a couple of nights. We checked into Absolute Backpackers, a small hostel in Wongaling beach, which is just a 5 minute drive from the heart of Mission beach. We initially intended to stay just one night, coming through in passing on our way to Cairns, but loved the hostel so much we chose to stay two. Booking.com had a deal on, offering a private room for only $42.50 total, so at just $21 each for the night, we couldn’t say no!

The hostel itself seemed a really nice place, with plenty of social seating areas and offering activities every day of the week including yoga, sushi making, movie night and more. We arrived on a Sunday which is BBQ night, so were lucky enough to have dinner provided for free! We both loved this hostel and will definitely be returning to stay here in future if we’re back in the area. Farm work is avaialble nearby, so we attempted to find work so we could stay around longer, but unfortunately it was just a few weeks too early for picking season.

With plenty of national parks around and a helpful guidebook offered from reception we decided to have an easy day of exploring nearby sights. We first drove to Licuala National Park and took a walk through the rainforest track. This was quite pretty and an easy walk, one I’d say that’s worthwhile if you’re nearby. Setting off from here, our next stop was Murray Falls. This was a beautiful waterfall which offers camping and swimming spots in the base of the waterfall. I’d love to come back here and camp for a few days and just chill out, something that’s on my list to do if we head back down this way.

The next day we took ourselves on a walk down mission beach to lookout for skydivers and crocodiles. Didn’t see crocodiles, but saw quite a few people landing down on the beach. It looked amazing fun and can’t wait until I have the money and nerve to do it! Our stop in mission beach was very much short but sweet, and it’s somewhere we wish to return to later on in our travels.
